I faced similar challenges in 2018 when I left my full-time job to freelance. Needing clients and income, I developed strategies to stay focused on my goals and handle the emotional rollercoaster. Here's what worked for me:

  1. I polished my professional profile, including my resume and LinkedIn. I wanted to meet client expectations perfectly before reaching out. Knowing every detail of my experience helped me confidently answer questions in meetings, especially about my achievements. Remember, your successes often solve their problems! Employers listen closely to accomplishments, so get those details right.
  2. Your personality is your PERSONAL REALITY - I created a vision board. But simply writing down goals isn't enough. Your daily actions and behavior need to align with that vision - no excuses! Consistency is key; once you lose momentum, motivation drops. I structured my vision board like this:

  • I am attending all networking events that I come across

  • I am exercising, walking everyday to ensure that I don’t waste my time in bed sitting and assuming

  • I am making sure that I am eating right and avoiding sweets

I am making sure that I watch one video of someone making me believe that there is hope available

  • To find an opportunity fulfilling my expertise, experience and passion

This framework kept me active and focused. But it needed translation into daily actions on my calendar. Why? To ensure I checked off all my goals each day. Here's how I structured my calendar:

By breaking down my job search into manageable daily tasks, I maintained momentum and a sense of progress. This approach helped me weather the emotional ups and downs of the process.

Remember, job searching is often a marathon, not a sprint. Be kind to yourself, celebrate small wins, and keep pushing forward. Your persistence will pay off, even when it feels like you're not making headway. Stay focused on your goals, maintain healthy habits, and keep refining your approach. The right opportunity will come along if you stay committed to your vision and keep taking action every day.

Identifying future outcomes is valuable, but it's important to acknowledge that sometimes, despite our best efforts, results don't come immediately. This can lead to discouragement and negative thoughts like:

  • My life is challenging
  • What if I can't find a job? How will I manage?
  • My finances are dwindling and time is limited
  • Everything seems to be getting harder
  • I wish my circumstances were better
  • Others seem luckier; why am I struggling?
  • I feel stuck and nothing is changing

These thoughts can be draining, potentially leading to lethargy and unhealthy eating habits. To avoid this downward spiral, consider these strategies:

  • Continue journaling, including action plans (as suggested above, specially in calendar format to follow up everyday)
  • Start meditating to calm anxious thoughts and the part of the brain that produces anxious thoughts
  • Maintain regular exercise to boost mood-enhancing chemicals
  • Stay hydrated - proper hydration helps manage stress hormones
  • Practice prayer or mindfulness to maintain hope and gratitude
  • Try sauna sessions for mood improvement
  • Focus on gut health - it plays a crucial role in mood regulation

My personal experience illustrates the unpredictable nature of opportunities. After four months without income, a LinkedIn contact unexpectedly reached out with job openings. Within two weeks, I had secured two positions, earning AED 46,000.

Opportunities often come to those who remain focused and resilient. It's your choice: stay on the path towards your goals or get sidetracked, potentially delaying your progress. While I can't guarantee immediate results, I can assure you that maintaining focus and perseverance will eventually lead to success. 

The universe responds not to your goals themselves, but to how consistently you pursue them.

Remember, job searching is rarely a linear process. There will be ups and downs, but your persistence is key. Here are some additional tips to maintain your momentum:

  1. Set small, achievable daily goals to feel a sense of progress
  2. Celebrate minor victories to boost your motivation
  3. Connect with others in similar situations for support and advice
  4. Take breaks when needed to avoid burnout
  5. Continuously refine your job search strategy based on feedback and results
  6. Volunteer or take on short-term projects to build skills and network
  7. Practice self-care to maintain your physical and mental well-being

By combining these strategies with the journaling and action plans mentioned earlier, you'll be better equipped to handle the emotional challenges of job searching. Stay committed to your vision, keep taking action, and trust that your efforts will eventually pay off. The right opportunity is out there - your job is to stay ready and open when it arrives.
